Friday 25th March (Yalgoo – Rocky Dam)

GOOD FRIDAY

Out to have a look at Jokers Tunnel as we leave Yalgoo on a magnificent 30 degree day.  This tunnel was carved through solid rock and apparently quite a bit of gold was found here.  No way am I venturing into the tunnel as there is a sign warning of Snakes…..yuk. We are hoping that the pool at Mt.Magnet is open when we get there as it is very hot now, I don’t like our chances as everything is closed n Good Friday. No luck as expected EVERYTHING is closed, so lunch under a nice shady tree in the Main Street of Mt.Magnet and then off towards Leinster. We have found a sign to “Paynesville” which is a ghost town between Mt.Magnet and Leinster.  There is only a Cemetery here now as well as a plaque that states there is only one grave of a young man accidently killed in 1906. There is also mention of a family that traveled to Paynesville and that family is named Lehane, small world. We have found a terrific camp for the night at Rocky Dam 50kms west of Sandstone which we found on Wikicamps.  A very refreshing swim in the dam which was very big and nice and clean and then happy hour sitting in our wet bathers under then awning to stay nice and cool. A light sprinkle of rain and thunder & lightening in the distance, as well as a full moon makes for a terrific show in the night skies. Turned out to be a terrific camp spot 500metres off the road and very secluded.

Inscription reads "The Lehane family on their way to the new find at Paynesville".....small world.
