Thursday 11th Feb (Baxter free Camp – Bromus Dam)

Another glorious day heading west towards Balladonia.  It would appear that we are heading into some hot weather but so far it has been really lovely and none of us have suffered with any heat.  We are still making sure to stay hydrated with a thermos of nice cold icy water in the car that we are constantly sipping.  Just passed a solo bike rider on one of those bikes that they lay down on, I really cannot see the attraction to biking across the Nullabor, it is very pleasant in the car with the air conditioning going and biking just looks like very hard work.  Have scratched another of my birthday scratchies and won $2…..yiipppeee.  I am allowing myself one a day and I am sure there is still a big winner in amongst the ones that are left.  We are currently driving on the longest straight stretch of road in Australia, 146kms without a bend.  Hoping to spot an eagle or two today and get some pictures if at all possible.  Not happy, I had my head down writing and Wayne spotted 2 eagles on the side of the road that had been killed, that makes me so sad. A stop at Balladonia to get fuel for the generators and then 50kms on toward Newman Rocks where we plan to have our lunch today.  There is water in the rockpool and when we arrived there were 2 emus down having a drink, too quick for me to get a picture, very skittish and ran off very quickly. We all managed a paddle in the water to cool down a bit and then on towards Norseman where the temperature is currently 44 degrees.  Plan on having a swim at the Norseman Community Swimming Pool as the temperature guage has now topped 47 degrees, blimey it is now very hot. Fabulous Olympic pool and had it all to ourselves so managed to cool down before heading to our camp for tonight 34kms south of Norseman at Bromus Dam.  The dam here is actually very nice and have been for another swim sharing the dam with some kids on the other side as well as a pair of backpackers from Poland & Germany. Hot, Hot, Hot, Barry has the air conditioner going to cool the van down a little but I have a feeling it is going to be a long hot night. Tomorrow we are heading into Esperance and will go into a caravan park to catch up on washing etc.
